For En Vacker Utställning at Konstmuseet in Kiruna, Gerd Aurell and Helena Laukkanen have co-created the site-specific work The Wind Blows from All Directions and Brings the Cuckoo’s Call (Göken gol från varje väderstreck).
Taking their previous collaborative project (2016) as a starting point, Aurell and Laukkanen give physical form to a conversation through materials of pink industrial paper towel and black ink. The resulting total image of structures and drawings is created through this pattern of non-verbal dialogue and the act of collaboration itself, becoming a document of time-specific memories and visual notes about their time in Kiruna.
Pink paper towel is often an industrial waste product used to dry surfaces but here has been manipulated and given new value, virtually indistinguishable from its former function. The resulting nature of the work also becomes a reflection upon material value of art production, taking an almost worthless material and elevating it to serve as a base material for a monumental and detailed sculptural installation.
